Not sure if people have found this one, but I'm finding it to be excellent:

50,000+ groups; allows posting; posts appear immediately.

Seconded. Loads of groups and they allow posting, which seems to be rare among free text groups services.

Lately, the free news server AIOE has been experiencing a lot of trouble and has been down for the last few days. If anyone else is now looking for an alternate, you may want to give this one a try. It allows read and posting, and carrys a large number of newsgroups.

http://news.motzarella.org/en/index.php (news.motzarella.org)

Requires registration with a valid email address so that a password can be forwarded to you. The registration process only takes a minute or so.

The server is fast and so far has been very reliable.

They also point out that yes you can use the .de extension but this is their old server and is being being phased out - .org is the preferred server to use.

According to their site, the new server to use is news2.motzarella.org

Just saw this on the site home page and thought I'd pass it on to those using this server:

News

2006-10-22 21:28:03 Motzarella offers NNTP access on port 80

Motzarella now also offers NNTP access on port 80. Please use the hostname reader.motzarella.org for this purpose.

reader.motzarella.org also offers access on port 119 (NNTP) and 563 (NNTPS) and will replace news2.motzarella.org (a.k.a. news.motzarella.de), that will be switched off by the end of the year.

reader.motzarella.org and news.motzarella.org have identical message numbers, so you don't have to reload your groups and subscriptions, when you switch between the two servers.

Also:

2006-10-22 21:26:42 Access via TOR network blocked

Access to Motzarella via the TOR network has been blocked due to massive abuse. All TOR servers allowing exit via port 119 have been blacklisted.

Their AUP / usage guide is here :

Free to read, but a limit of 25 posts per day to prevent spammers.

news.x-privat.org AND newsgate.x-privat.org

http://www.x-privat.org/international.php

news.x-privat.org carries 20,000 groups

newsgate.x-privat.org 26,000 groups

A one time registration to set up. Same username and password used for either or both servers. If one server is slow, use the other. Excellent. Italian.

Note: From June 01, 2005 newsgate.x-privat.org will carry a one time fee of 6 Euro.

Note2: Subscriptions to the free server will be terminated 30 september 2005.

news.sunsite.dk http://news.sunsite.dk/

16,590 groups and increasing. University based, text only (no binaries) Resistration required but very easy to setup and is a fast, good service. Long retention of posts (2 mths )

Some others which I've heard of, but haven't investigated (feel free to edit as appropriate):

news.readfreenews.net (free signup at http://cust.readfreenews.net ), where I believe I'm posting this reply from.

where it advises you:

Because of the amount of abuse lately, the ability to sign up for an account has been terminated.

news.tesco.net

news.sunsite.dk (posting allowed after free registration)

freenews.netfront.net (posting allowed)

gail.ripco.com (I'm using port 120 and I believe no posting allowed)

The above sites requiring registration are only looking for a email location they can send your new account activation password to. None of them ask for credit card info.
